Geopunkt Kammleiten (Garnterkofel Sessellift)

On the way from the Watschiger Alm to the Kammleiten, the trail crosses a rock that is unique for this area shortly before the summit. It consists of colourful, decimeter-sized rounded boulders of limestone and dolomite. The rock is known as "Muschelkalk conglomerate" or Uggowitz breccia and was formed in the older Triassic period (about 230 million years ago). The 44 m thick rock builds up the entire summit of the Kammleiten. Only in the lower part is a layer of green volcanic tuffs about four metres thick wiped away. These tuffs could be an indication of their formation by an earthquake or a volcanic eruption that shook the seabed, lifting parts of the subsoil above the surrounding area. For example, angular rock debris may have accumulated at the foot of the high tufa, which was relocated, transported, crushed and rounded near the coast. The consolidation into a conglomerate was achieved by the load of the overlying rocks.
