Poetry – Diversity of Languages and Voices

As part of the event, poems in dialect, standard German, and Slovenian will be presented. The speaker Dietmar Pickl will take on the reading (“branje”) and will transport the audience on a linguistic journey through different forms of expression. Martin Sadounik accompanies, complements, and deepens the experience with his accordion.

The program brings together works by H. C. Artmann, Delphine Blumenfeld, Bernhard C. Bünker, Erich Fried, Michael Guttenbrunner, Ernst Jandl, Gert Jonke, Axel Karner, Janko Messner, Jani Oswald, and Kurt Schwitters. The selection reflects the diversity of literary voices and leads through various genres and traditions of poetry.

The performance skillfully plays with different speaking and linguistic styles. It features not only classical lyrical forms but also expressions from the criminal subculture. The program does not shy away from any awkward situations, is politically mostly incorrect, and oscillates between coarse humor and tender poetry. In this context, unsuspecting angels meet lovable monsters.

A glossary is not necessary – access to the language unfolds from the context. Should there still be any ambiguity, the respective translation into the second national language will be provided.

The program leaps from language to language and from one way of speaking to another, juggling with expressions from the criminal subculture, missing no opportunity to be ridiculous, is politically mostly incorrect, and is placed in the rough tenderness between completely clueless angels and charming monsters. No dictionary is needed, as it is self-explanatory. However, if there are uncertainties: a translation into the other national language will be available.
