The parish church of St. Daniel is dedicated to the "Holy Daniel," and this is also the name of the location, which belongs to the community of Dellach/Gail.
If you come from the west and reach the municipal border at Höfling, you immediately notice the onion dome, which seems to rise far into the sky. If you approach from the east, you can see the church's spire shining into the landscape from a distance.
The parish church of St. Daniel dates back to the 9th century; in any case, around 1100 it was the original or mother parish for Upper Gail and Lesachtal, which then belonged to the Patriarchate of Aquileia.
The church, which is 30 meters long and 10 meters wide, is a simple structure from the last quarter of the 15th century. The walls of the nave preserve remnants of the Romanesque church. The slightly narrower and lower choir was certainly built after the destruction of the old church by the Turks in 1478.
The pointed west door is profiled and, as is customary in the Gail Valley, rectangular in shape. Noteworthy are the Gothic iron fittings on the oak door. Particularly impressive is the colorful decoration on the pillars and the ribbed vault, which gives the house of worship a cheerful appearance.
From 2002 to 2004, the church was extensively renovated. During this period, ground excavations were also carried out inside the church, which are described in a commemorative publication (2004).
For protection against theft, the church is closed. You can obtain the key from the parish office - by prior arrangement (Tel: 04718/678).
