The giant hill at Wieserberg has long been surrounded by various opinions and stories.
Is it a medieval fortification, a burial mound, or a naturally formed hilltop?
Using ground radar, a massive Hallstatt-era burial mound constructed by humans was identified, featuring an artificial earth fill of about 20,000 cubic meters. From June 2000 to August 2001, archaeological excavations were conducted, taking into account the enormous dimensions. The unusual absence of any finds within the burial chamber supports the geological view that it is a natural moraine from the Ice Age. The final report concludes, after weighing all arguments, that the skeptics were right: it is an Ice Age moraine. However, the pressing question remains: where do the finds come from, and what relationship do they have to the hill?
What remains consistently fascinating is the stunning location high above the valley, the proximity of St. Helena Church, and the Roman-era earthworks on the church hill, which indicate a millennia-long prominent use of Wieserberg.
Miscellaneous:
In the meantime, the hill has been removed, and a private fire water pond is now located at this site.
