St. Helena am Wieserberg

St. Helena am Wieserberg - situated high above the valley in solitude, is a special gem and is often used as a wedding church.
Construction: Romanesque hall building with a small semicircular apse and late Gothic tower (early 16th century).
In the apse, there are 2 Romanesque slit windows and a younger Gothic pointed arch window with tracery. In the middle of the nave, there are large Baroque round-arched windows on the north and south sides. On the north side, there is a carved pulpit (1682), and in the west, a Baroque wooden gallery.
Romanesque frescoes: One of the treasures of Romanesque art in Carinthia. Impressive, above all, due to the painterly modeling and the overall composition.
In the center of the apse, Christ is enthroned in the mandorla, holding the Book of Life in his left hand, surrounded by the symbols of the Evangelists. The apostles encircle the altar table at the apse wall.
In the triumphal arch, the forerunners of the apostles, the prophets of the Old Testament, are depicted in half-figure from window-like fields, gesturing lively towards the apse.
On the triumphal arch wall, the upper part shows Cain and Abel presenting their offerings. The northern field depicts the crucifixion group above, and below, St. Oswald and St. Helena, the patron saint of the church. In the upper southern field, the Queen of Heaven is seated on the mercy seat, with the Christ child on her lap.
Southern exterior wall: 2 frescoes of St. Christopher.
The impressive Romanesque depiction is only visible in the tower and shows the Christbearer dressed in a fur-lined mantle. The visible Gothic fresco dates to the early 16th century.

The key to the church is available during the opening hours of the municipal office (Mon - Thu 07:30 - 15:45, Fri 07:30 - 12:00) upon presentation of an ID. Tel.: 04718-301

If the owners of the mountain farm directly in front of the path to the church (Wieserbauer) are at home, it is also possible to get a key directly from them.
