Carnic mountain villages

The unique natural landscape surrounding the Carnic mountain villages is perfect for picture-book hiking experiences. Located along the Carnic Peace Trail, the mountain villages of Egger Alm, Dellacher Alm, Poludnig Alm and Feistritzer Alm at Oisternig mountain directly at the Italian state border are a delightful team of four when it comes to enjoying the region’s most delicious specialities.

Far away from the hustle and bustle, the high valley above Hermagor is as charming as they come. Time seems to stand still there: No noise, no stress, the only things you hear are the chiming of the cow bells and birdsong.

What better place than one of the four mountain villages to take a seat, enjoy the sun and sample the scrumptious culinary treats served at Egger Alm, Dellacher Alm, Poludnig Alm or Feistritzer Alm? Enjoy home-made Carinthian “Kasnudeln”, a traditional “Almjause” snack platter or some irresistible “Kaiserschmarren” – far away from the hustle and bustle, these delicacies taste even better, you’ll see!

Our tip: At Egger Alm, the famous Gailtaler Almkäse g.U. mountain cheese is traditionally produced by master cheese maker Elisabeth.

Good to know: Three of the four mountain villages can be reached via Möderndorf near Hermagor and the paved Eggeralm road (L23).

Hiking highlights

  • From Egger Alm up Poludnig mountain

This easy hike up to the summit rewards you with spectacular views of the High Tauern mountains and the Julian Alps.

  • From Egger Alm to Egger-Alm lake
Located at 1,399 metres above sea level, the picturesque mountain lake glistens in the sun, inviting young and young-at-heart explorers to discover fragrant mountain flowers and herbs on a leisurely stroll. Who knows, maybe you’ll even catch sight of one of the newts living in the lake?

Our tip: At the foot of Eggeralm road (Möderndorf), you can also find the access to Garnitzenklamm gorge – a “cool” idea for a day trip especially on hot summer days!
