"Summer 1944 - Paths of Remembrance"

On the occasion of the 82nd anniversary of the massacre of the civilian population on the Italian Carnic Alps by Nazis and fascists, we hike to the memorial chapel at Promos Alm/ C.ra Promosio and further on to Timau.

Directions

Via the Gailtal road B111 to Dellach, from there south towards Weidenburg, 2.5 km away.

Alternatively:

Via the Plöcken Pass road B110 over the Gailberg saddle to Mauthen, from there east via Würmlach to Weidenburg, 5.1 km away

Directions

Along the Asnitzbach stream, we reach the Bischofalm and the Skarnitz alpine basin. We walk along a section of the Carnic High Mountain Trail and cross the border into Italy at the ancient Kronhofer Törl (Passo Promosio). We quickly reach the extensive plateau of the Promoser Alm/ Malga Promosio / Cjasere Promôs. After an entertaining descent through the shady beech forest, we reach Timau/Tischlwang, one of Friuli's German-speaking islands.
