Expedition to the southernmost glacier of Austria

It still exists, the southernmost glacier of Austria – the Eiskar. Nestled in the 800 meter high Kellerwand and among myriads of fossilized corals, this glacier field lies hidden in the Carnic Alps.

Suggestion

During the summer months, the GeoPark Karnische Alpen and Naturarena Kärnten offer a weekly guided hike into the Eiskar with nature and mountain guides.

From Kötschach-Mauthen (705 meters above sea level) on the Plöckenpass federal road to the Plöckenpass (1,370 meters above sea level)

Vom Plöckenpass folgt man einem alten Karrenweg mit der Nr. 147 Richtung Cellon bzw. Grüne Schneid (Cresta Verde). Auf ca. 1.650 m Seehöhe zweigt man vom Weg Richtung Westen ab und gelangt über steile Grashänge auf schönen Serpentinen auf die Grüne Schneid (2.086m). Von dort wandert man entlang der Grünen Schneid nach Westen Richtung Kollinkofel, zweigt am westlichen Ende der Grünen Schneid nach Norden ab und folgt einem alten Kriegssteig ins Grüne Tal. Nun wird der Steig anspruchsvoller, ein kurzes Stück ist mit einem Drahtseil gesichert. Über einen teilweise nur angedeuteten Steig erreicht man den Gabelekopf in 2.289 m Seehöhe. Trittsicherheit und Schwindelfreiheit sind auf diesem Abschnitt unerlässlich ! Vom Gabelekopf aus kann man das erste Mal das Eiskar einsehen und erreicht von dort nach ca. 20 Minuten den Gletscher. Abstieg wie Aufstieg.
