RW_N60 Freikofel and Kleiner Pal

The historically and scenically very rewarding circular hike to the Kleiner Pal and the summit of the Freikofel illustrates the strong contrast between idyll and suffering.

Suggestion

It is worth taking a headlamp to explore the countless tunnels driven into the mountain by soldiers on the hike.

In the town hall of Kötschach-Mauthen there is the Dolomitenfreunde Museum 1915-1918 on about 600m², which is an extremely interesting complement to the open-air museum.

Directions

Public transport:

The most sustainable way to travel is by train to Oberdrauburg (coming from Lienz or Villach) or to Hermagor (coming from Villach).

From Oberdrauburg or Hermagor, you can then reach the town of Kötschach-Mauthen by bus. From here, depending on the season and availability, there is the possibility to use the call bus or a taxi to the Plöckenpass.
