DESCRIPTION Explore the Lesachtal-Gailtal-Gitschtal-Weissensee region – the world's first Slow Food Travel destination - by bike! Cycle effortlessly from producer to producer along well-developed cycle paths in picturesque natural surroundings. Make time for sampling the products on site, chat with the producers and learn about their passion for food production. Don't forget to bring a large rucksack or side bag in case you want to do some shopping. These tours are not just about the distance travelled. Most of all, they are about the combination of being active in beautiful natural surroundings and discovering delicious treasures. Enjoy a unique experience of tastes and flavours, produced according to the Slow Food motto "good, clean, fair" by people with a great appreciation for our planet.

ROUTE CHARACTERISTICS The tour leads along the very well-developed Gailtal Cycle Route on flat sections, making it suitable for both e-bikes and classic bikes. The tour is suitable for children aged 12 and older.

ROUTE IN DETAIL

FRIDAY, 7 JUNE 2024 Experience an unforgettable bike tour through the picturesque Carinthian countryside and discover the culinary highlights of the region! The day tour starts at 8.25am with the bike bus, including bike transport, to Kötschach-Mauthen. Then, at 9am, a special highlight awaits at the Matitz bakery, where you will be personally welcomed by master baker Thomas Matitz, also known as the "Kräckerbäcker" (cracker baker). Enjoy a delicious hot drink and a slice of the traditional country maize Reindling cake. Afterwards, at 10am, you will find yourself in an unforgettable Slow Food experience at Herwig Ertl's Delicatessen in Kötschach. Enjoy a true explosion of flavours with regional Slow Food products from the Lesachtal Valley, Gailtal Valley and Lake Weißensee. Herwig presents a selection of fine food on a large oak table in the shop, accompanied by samples of delicious wines that will tantalise your palate. After this culinary highlight, continue your cycle tour along the Gailtal Cycle Route back to Hermagor or, alternatively, further on to Nötsch, with a length totalling approx. 57 kilometres. Along the route, we recommend a stop at the Neuwirth family in Gundersheim to reward yourself with a delicious and refreshing farmhouse ice cream and recharge your batteries. TIP FOR YOUR ARRIVAL We recommend travelling to Hermagor by train. The S-Bahn service 4 runs every hour - arrival in Hermagor is at 7.18 / 8.18am. It is therefore easy to change to the bike bus. The bus driver will also be informed that guests may be arriving by train to join this tour. The return journey is also possible in that way; the train leaves at 44 minutes past the hour every hour. You will need a ticket for the journey and a day ticket for the bike. It is not necessary to make a reservation for the bike. Low-floor trains for easy access are usually in service along this route.
