Ascent from the Straniger Alm to the Zollnersee hut

The metres of ascent are already covered on the first half of the hike. The highest point of the hike is reached at Findenigkofel and the route tends to be all downhill. You hike along the ridge, which is never exposed but still requires surefootedness, and have a great view of the valleys and mountains towering behind. The trail pretty much follows the border between Italy and Austria and you will also come across relics of the mountain war along the way.
Equipment
Normal hiking equipment including sturdy hiking boots, first aid kit and weatherproof clothing.
Directions
Coming via Villach on the A2 motorway to the Hermagor/ Gailtal/ Gitschtal / Lesachtal exit, continue on the B111 to Kirchbach, turn left in the village and drive over the Gail to Oberdöbernittzen. Continue to Stranig and Goderschach and then on a good gravel road to the Straniger Alm.

Directions

From the Straniger Alm, follow trail no. 403 uphill across alpine meadows. You cross a farm track and continue uphill to Lodintörl (approx. 1870m) and follow the path towards the ridge. After passing an old tunnel from the First World War, the path gradually becomes steeper and leads along the ridge up to the Findenigkofel/Monte Lodin (2016m). On the other side of the summit, you descend along the ridge to the Lodinut Pass (1817m) and from there continue north of the ridge to Lake Zollnersee (1766). After passing the lake on the southern shore, it is not far to the Zollnersee hut (1741m).
