Freikofel and Kleine Pal RW_N60

The historically and scenically extremely rewarding circular hike to the Kleine Pal and the summit of the Freikofel illustrates the strong contrast between idyll and suffering.

Suggestion
  • It is worth bringing a headlamp to explore the countless tunnels that soldiers drove into the mountain during the hike.
  • The described return path leads through Italy - therefore carrying an ID is mandatory.
  • In the town hall of Kötschach-Mauthen, on around 600m², is the Museum 1915-1918 of the Dolomite Friends, which is an extremely interesting addition to the open-air museum.
  • There are several ascent and descent variations leading to the Kleine Pal - the description and the track explain the variant - ascent via Freikofelscharte, including Freikofel, return to Freikofelscharte - ascent Kleine Pal and return via the Alpini Steig (Italian side)
    • a shorter but steeper descent option is also offered by the descent of RW_N61
    •  Detailed information about the different options can also be found in the book "Das Freilichtmuseum Plöckenpass" - also available in the Museum 1915-1918 in the Kötschach-Mauthen town hall
